<h3>National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)</h3><p>The annual <a href="https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan">NAPLAN </a>assessment is administered by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) and Education Services Australia (ESA) to students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The assessment measures academic progress of students on a national scale across five assessment areas to identify strengths, understand potential learning gaps and tailor future learning and strategies.</p><p>Carey students regularly perform well in NAPLAN across all year levels and areas of assessment. We are pleased to share our students' 2025 NAPLAN results.</p>

<h3>Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)</h3><p>Upon completion of their secondary studies – either the IB or VCE – students receive an <a href="https://vtac.edu.au/blog/2129-what-is-the-atar-and-how-does-it-work.html"><strong>ATAR</strong></a>, a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates their academic rank relative to their cohort. ATARs are used by universities to assess which students they offer courses to.</p><p>Carey's Class of 2025 achieved excellent results. <h3>Competency Credential and Learner Profiles</h3><p>In 2024, Carey was selected to join The University of Melbourne as a partner school in their work to develop a new-age secondary school credential as part of their <a href="https://education.unimelb.edu.au/melbourne-metrics/our-research/new-metrics#home">New Metrics project</a>. Through our partnership with The University of Melbourne, alongside their ATAR score, Carey students now also graduate with a Learner Profile which are used by educators and tertiary institutions to understand, holistically, each individual's strengths, abilities, motivations and potential contributions to the community both during and after their time at school.</p><p><a href="https://www.carey.com.au/about-carey/life-at-carey/educational-philosophy/complex-competencies-at-carey"><span class="type_button scale-sm type-outline theme-light arrow-true">Read more here</span></a></p>

<h3>Meet some of our high-achieving alumni</h3>

<p>Jacob graduated from Carey in 2025 as the IB Dux, having achieved a perfect IB score of 45 and an ATAR of 99.95, which is the highest possible ATAR score. In 2026, Jacob began his studies in medicine at Monash University, which he says requires a great deal of time management, communication and collaboration skills, as well as academic competence. 'Learning to balance my studies with co-curricular activities at Carey helped me develop my organisational skills ... so I went into 2026 feeling well-equipped to start my course', Jacob says.</p><p class="c-dmbjHP c-dmbjHP-flhRey-variant-Body-Small c-dmbjHP-bmjmsR-font-poppins c-dmbjHP-ieFTPCr-css">Jacob believes the most important factor behind his academic success was his support network. 'I had amazing teachers who taught in an engaging way and cared about my wellbeing deeply, and my friends and family helped me to stay motivated and push through even the most stressful times.'</p><p>Jacob's advice to younger students who are aiming for strong results is to prioritise sleep. 'Having a good sleep routine allowed me to fully concentrate in class, absorb content easier and study more consistently and efficiently. Regardless of how busy your schedule is, it’s always better to maintain good sleep than to stay up late to study.'</p>

Jacob Zhang

<p>Bridie graduated as a <a href="https://www.carey.com.au/our-schools/senior-school/class-of-2025-results">Carey Scholar</a> in 2025, after studying the IB and achieving an ATAR equivalent above 98. While at Carey, Bridie discovered a passion for music, particularly oboe, and began a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in 2026.</p><p>Asked about balancing instrumental practice with academics, Bridie admitted it was challenging but developing a schedule helped. 'The stress and busyness of exams meant I frequently lacked motivation to practice, instead wanting to focus on studying. I had to work out a schedule to balance practice and study, and after I submitted my [university] audition, I directed my attention solely towards the end-of-year exams.'</p><p>Bridie says Carey staff were incredibly helpful during her time in Year 12. '[They] encouraged me to perform to the best of my abilities and helped me discover my passions and goals for the future. I was able to pursue my favourite activities and hobbies in the performing arts alongside my academics, ensuring that Year 12 was a year of joy as well as importance.'</p><p>Bridie's advice for current and future Year 12s is to 'surround yourself with friends who will support and help you through Year 12. Although it is a stressful year, having friends who you can laugh with and study with makes the year so much more enjoyable. Also – savour every moment of your last year. It goes by so quickly and only towards the end do you realise how much you will miss it.'</p>

Bridie Conway

<p>Kevin graduated from Carey in 2024 as the VCE Dux achieving an impressive <span>99.55 ATAR. Since graduating, Kevin began his studies in medicine at Monash University, something he's dreamed of doing for a long time. 'My time at Carey gave me the confidence and ambition to pursue this dream. Opportunities to serve the community gave me a much greater appreciation for understanding the stories and needs of the different people in our community, while also teaching me to take initiative and lead by example,' says Kevin.</span></p><p><span>In addition to maintaining good study habits, Kevin believes that creating time to take care of yourself and maintain time for other interests and activities is just as important. He says that in order to achieve high academic results, students should 'strive to apply themselves and put their best efforts into any aspect of their life, especially their studies. However, I encourage everyone to participate in whatever activities help them destress, and make an effort to maintain close friendships. This can be balanced through being deliberate with how you spend your time. When you are studying, be fully focussed on studying and make that time count. If you are doing something else, put your full attention into that and do not feel guilty about stepping away from your work ... Carey provides some of the best opportunities to be involved with the community, so I would encourage everyone to be proactive in participating and hope everyone discovers the same sense of purpose and fulfilment in doing so.'</span></p><p><span>Kevin also says his involvement in Carey's co-curricular program, community service activities and leadership positions as both a House Captain and Carey Local and Overseas Student Association Leader gave him the chance to become even more involved in Carey’s service initiatives and make a worthwhile contribution to the community. 'My afternoons and weekends were often packed ... but in my final year, I was incredibly fortunate to have had the privilege to serve the broader Carey community and these meaningful experiences played an influential role in shaping who I am today, as they challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and exposed me to new people, perspectives and experiences that broadened the way I see the world.'</span></p>
