Shakespeare’s play Richard 111 opened with the famous line, ‘Now is the winter of our discontent’, a line that was again used as the title of a John Steinbeck novel, but the arrival of winter at Carey has been far from gloomy. Perhaps it is the fact that we move at such a rapid pace that we continue to ward off the cold. That initial step into winter will see us farewell the seventh of our Zero Journey groups travelling to our campus at Mission Beach, while all of our Year 6 students have recently completed their outdoor program at Toonallook. A group of Year 9 students are due to depart shortly for Robinson River as a complement to their study as part of the Indigenous Studies elective.
We have certainly been warmed this week by our active celebration of Reconciliation Week. The busy schedule of staff professional development, education opportunities and cultural celebrations culminates tomorrow in a whole-school casual clothes day. All students and staff are encouraged to wear a touch of yellow to recognise Wear It Yellow Day and raise funds for Children’s Ground, who provide access to education, health and employment opportunities for First Nations children, families and communities. This is an affirmation of the goals established in our Reconciliation Action Plan, which is driven by the collective commitment of the Carey community to foster understanding, respect, diversity and inclusivity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our community.
Regardless of the season, our school remains active in pursuing pathways for students to fully embrace our school values of Care, Respect and Growth.
