Outdoor Education at Carey is about connection, curiosity and care for the world around us.
Each experience is carefully designed to help students engage deeply with the social, cultural, historical and geographical stories of the places they visit. Through guided learning journeys, students and staff respond to the unique character of each place – thinking critically, learning actively and building meaningful connections with the environment. In doing so, they develop respect, responsibility and a sense of belonging that extends well beyond the outdoors.
These experiences support our school’s purpose: to inspire and equip young people to create positive change, and to foster an inclusive community where every individual can make a meaningful contribution to society.
Outdoor Education is part of a complete education at Carey. Students experience a sequential program from Prep through to Year 9, providing the building blocks for the integrated three-week immersive experience of Carey Zero in Year 10.
Camp Toonallook is a beautiful four-hectare tract of land on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes. It is owned by the School and is one of Carey’s greatest assets. Students from Year 4 to Year 7 visit Toonallook as part of their outdoor learning journey. Toonallook is also utilised for several leadership camps and retreats for older students as well as other experiential programs.
