Outdoor Education is an important part of the Carey learning journey, and Camp Toonallook is a home away from home for our students.
An experience at Toona is core to a student’s journey at Carey and holds a special place in the hearts of the community. Located approximately 300 kilometres from Melbourne, ‘Toona’ provides Outdoor Education experiences for Junior and Middle School students and is the venue for several leadership camps and retreats for older students.
Experiences at Camp Toonallook provide Carey staff and students with the opportunity to develop a deep place-based connection to the traditional Country of the Tatungalung people of the Gunaikurnai Nation. Its name reminds us that we are part of a much older story – one that stretches back well before Carey, to the Gunaikurnai people who have lived, fished, and cared for these waters for generations.
Water- and land-based activities, supervised by professional Outdoor Education instructors, provide challenges that develop physical confidence, strengthen resilience and allow students to expand their friendship groups – and have a lot of fun at the same time.
