1979: A year of 'firsts'

High school reunions are well known for having the ability to bring back memories from the time you attended school. Whether for good or bad, high school was an important time in your life, and it was a period of momentous firsts. First loves, first friendships, first cars, first kisses and first concerts.

On Friday 15 March, the Class of 1979 celebrated their 40-Year Reunion. For those present, including 18 past staff, the night was brimming with nostalgia, and more importantly the sharing of stories and experiences since leaving Carey. For the Class of ’79, the night certainly brought back memories of many first experiences, however this occasion marked one of Carey’s most important firsts: the first girls joining the School, marking the beginning of co-education. It was great to see so many Inaugural Girls present. We have many wonderful events planned throughout the year, and in particular we look forward to welcoming our first female alumni to the annual 40+ Years Reunion in October.

Continuing the theme of firsts, we welcomed back the first teachers who met at Carey and went onto marry, Ian and Maggie James, along with the first Carey couple in the same peer year to also go on to marry, Michelle and Stuart Yeo.

Sharing a few laughs and memories with the people who were by your side for all of those firsts can be very rewarding, and this was certainly true for the Class of 1979.
