It was with great pleasure that I attended my first Year 12 Formal at Carey on the final Saturday evening of the holiday break. This event was the first of this year’s important rites of passage for our students as they journey through the final chapter of their journey as a Carey student. It was clear that our students had looked forward to the event with great anticipation, and they were so happy to not only be able to attend, but to make many happy memories with their classmates from the class of 2021.

We also look forward to celebrating the Class of 2020’s Formal on Friday. The circumstances of last year left students without many of those important and highly valued rites of passage, so we are grateful to be able to provide this for them now. Several of Carey’s Senior School staff will be in attendance and taking part in the reunion of the 2020 Year 12 cohort.

Each time we gather together as a community, we have the opportunity to tell the story of Carey and its people, past and present. The novelist Salman Rushdie talks of stories in a family as ‘colossally important’, and he argues that knowing these stories is ‘proof of belonging to a family’. If we are to agree with Rushdie’s view of stories and family, then each time we gather together in the Carey community, whether it be at special assembly such as this week’s beautiful Anzac Day Service, House Chapel, a student-led activity or the Year 12 Formal, we are, in fact, sharing the ever-evolving story of our Carey family. Through this storytelling, we remind each other that belonging is not just about how we are with each other, it is about who we are with one another.

There is much to look forward to in the Senior School this term including our weekly assemblies; CLOSA celebrations; Winter Sport; the Senior School Musical, Shrek; the Year 10 Outdoor Ed and Enrichment Experiences; Music Performances and the VCE Play; the Carey Literature Festival; and, of course, Semester 1 Examinations. We will also continue our work on supporting our students’ wellbeing, positive mental health and capacity to engage in relationships underpinned by mutual respect.

I look forward to watching the Carey story unfold as we celebrate the rest of the 2021 academic school year together.
