August 21–27 saw 57 students represent Carey at the Victorian Interschool Championships held at Mt Buller. The start of the week brought foggy conditions and sideways hail, but by mid-week it was blue skies and sunshine.

Despite the lack of fresh snow, the snow-making machines were on full blast, providing us with enough snow to have fun and compete on some pretty good courses! Every student gave it their all to represent not only themselves, but their team and the school. We had several first-time competitors, as well as three Year 12 students competing for one last time.

Carey traditionally has a strong snowsports team with a rather large portion of our students qualifying for nationals. This year was no different with our primary (Junior School) students finishing in sixth place in the co-ed division, whilst our secondary (Middle and Senior School) students came in eighth place. We had a total of 19 students qualify for nationals across 42 events, which is a huge achievement! Unfortunately though, the national event which was scheduled for this week has been cancelled due to poor snow conditions.

Many thanks go out to everyone involved in the lead-up to and during interschools, especially the staff, parents and the committee ensuring we were all at the right spot at the right time, and putting together our race packs with some extra cool items in there too! The parents sacrificed a lot of time and effort to bring their kids up, and being team managers and course officials, so we are all very thankful to them. Furthermore, the event could not have been run without the committee and we thank them for their work behind the scenes, organising events and having the team’s best interests in mind.

Snowsports 2023

Finally, I hope we can come back next year bigger and better, and I encourage everyone to, if possible, give snowsports a go – ‘if you can ski green, you’re on the team!’ In addition, trials day is a great way of having a go and seeing if you like it. Snowsports one of the most unique, enjoyable and rewarding sports in the world, with fantastic views wherever you look. It's even better doing it with family and friends, and the Carey community!
