The annual Teachers versus Students’ Netball Game began in 2022 to promote and celebrate female sport. It is an initiative that came from the Carey Gender Equity Group. Each year, the Middle School hosts the game on Macafee Courts at lunchtime. Netballers in an A Team from Years 7 to 9 play against a group of female staff members.

This year, the event was held on Thursday 8 June. Team Teachers won by three goals in 2022, and Team Students was not happy, so in 2023 they came back with a vengeance and won by eight goals! The final score was 20–12. The Teachers would like everyone to know, though, that they had only eight players this year whereas the students had 14 and were able to rotate between them throughout the game!

Each year, a massive crowd turns out to see the game. We have students, teachers and other staff members from around the School come along to view the spectacle. The Gender Equity Group and Student Representative Council banded together to host a sausage sizzle with some soft drinks as well. The sausage sizzle, as well as donations from students for a casual clothes day held at the same time, raised $1000. This money was divided up between the Houses to donate towards their chosen House charities, although $300 of that also went towards female-run charity the Afghan Women’s Organisation Victoria.

This year’s Teachers versus Students’ Netball Game was an amazing event. The vibes were high and everyone had a great time, especially the crowd. We look forward to seeing the Teachers try to reclaim their title in 2024!
