Over the past few weeks there has been a broad conversation in the media about consent and sexual assault around Australia. Sadly, the prevalence of this issue across the country is a stark reality and one that, as a school community, we are not immune to. It is incumbent upon us all to open a dialogue within our community and within individual families.

We have a wonderfully supportive culture at Carey, and it is the respectful relationships that make the Carey learning community such a positive one. We cannot, however, take this for granted, and indeed we should continually reinforce the need for all members of our community to act with kindness, integrity, courage and respect for others.

Education about sex, relationships and consent must form a critical part of the curriculum and continue to evolve in response to the changing social environment. We understand that it is important to provide clear instruction and positive modelling around healthy relationships and it is imperative that advice around the nature of consent is presented to our students. Despite the robust discussions and education we already provide for our students, we are cognisant that we need to do more in order to respond to entrenched unhealthy societal norms that allow disrespectful behaviour to continue across Australia.

There is great expertise and experience within the School to support parents, students and staff in addressing these challenging issues and we will continue to run parent education programs to assist you in guiding your children through adolescence. We are also keen to support any student, current or past, who may have been impacted in this way.

Please reach out to Student Development at Carey, your Head of School or the Principal for more information or advice.
