In his welcome address at the Boston Conservatory, Karl Paulnack observed that:

Music is not part of ‘arts and entertainment’ as the newspaper section would have us believe. It's not a luxury, a lavish thing that we fund from leftovers of our budgets, not a plaything or an amusement or a past time. Music is a basic need of human survival. Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives, one of the ways in which we express feelings when we have no words, a way for us to understand things with our hearts when we can't with our minds.

Powerful words that effectively express the importance of music in everyday life; in education, at the gym, in movies, in live settings, in our working day – even in the elevator.

Music is inextricably linked with experiences and memories and there is no question that such memories have been made this term in the performing arts. The Choral Concert, Winter Strings Concert, Whole School Guitar Concert, recitals, Middle School Musical – these are all events that have occurred this term, with students performing with commitment and pride.

Term 2 performance highlights

The Winter Strings Concert featured ensembles from all school sections, and it was standing room only in the IWA. The progression from our youngest through to our oldest students in the ensembles is witnessed throughout the evening and you cannot underestimate how important it is for this trajectory to be observed by parents and students alike.

Congratulations to the cast, crew, musicians and creatives involved in Middle School production of
The Little Mermaid

Term 2 is a busy time for all involved but those who have experienced the show will appreciate that it is very much worth the effort. The stage was filled with bright costumes and exciting choreography. The cast performed with enthusiasm, bringing the show to life for all to enjoy.

A special event this term was the combined concert that Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony shared with the Melbourne Wind Ensemble (MWE). MWE brings together musicians, music educators and music enthusiasts to prepare music together under the batons of our own Leader of Learning, Jemima Bunn, and Joanne Heaton. Several Carey music staff played in the ensemble as well, the challenging music a good reminder of keeping the practice up! All of the groups played brilliantly, and it was an excellent afternoon for all those wind band geeks amongst us.

We are looking forward to a break, and then a busy Term 3 with music camp, VSMF, and a concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre. We are looking forward to sharing all of those performances with our Carey community.
