October is Cyber Security Awareness Month and I’m pleased to share some of the important initiatives taking place behind the scenes to strengthen Carey’s digital defences. We’ve been working diligently to upgrade our networks, enhance security systems and update our information security policies. These steps are part of our ongoing strategy to help protect the School from cybersecurity threats and support the safety of our community’s data.

Key initiatives include:

  • Providing staff and students with advice on how to stay safe online. We are particularly pleased to welcome Carey alum Robert Di Pietro, PwC Australia’s Cybersecurity and Digital Trust Lead, for a special presentation to staff later this month.
  • Strengthening our Cyber Incident Response Management Plan to effectively manage potential cyber incidents, including data breaches.
  • Updating standards and procedures for data retention, device use, network operations, software usage and incident response.

These measures help reduce the risk of harm from cyber incidents and ensure our response aligns with legal and community expectations.

How you can help

We all play a role in protecting Carey from cybersecurity threats. Although malicious attacks are often the cause of data breaches, users' vulnerability increases the risk. That is why vigilance is key.

To mitigate data spills, breaches and other cybersecurity incidents, the Australian Cyber Security Centre advises the following:

  • Periodically reset passwords to reduce the ongoing risk of credential compromises.
  • Ensure new passwords do not follow a recognisable pattern: this reduces the risk of intelligent brute-forcing based on previously stolen credentials.
  • Never provide your personal, credit card or online account details if you receive a call claiming to be from your bank or any other organisation. Instead, ask for their name and contact number and make an independent check with the organisation in question before calling back.
  • Avoid opening attachments or clicking on links from unknown senders by email or social media.
  • Refrain from using the same password across critical services such as banking and social media sites or sharing passwords for a critical service with a non-critical service.

If you or your child detect suspicious activity on a Carey device or application, report it immediately to cyber@carey.com.au or call 03 9816 1500.

By staying informed and working together, we can help Carey remain a safe and secure environment for everyone in our community.
