Carey's Senior School and Student Wellbeing teams are pleased to invite parents of students of any year level to come along and hear from mental health advocate Nic Newlings on Tuesday 6 May. This event is open to all Carey parents/carers and interested wider community members.
Nic’s personal story follows the highs and lows of having a mood disorder in school, the challenges of being misdiagnosed, and the grief of losing his brother to suicide. He details his temporary efforts to ‘be normal’ and keep his struggles a secret, all while facing the usual challenges that life brings. Nic’s presentation will explore the often-hidden experiences of adolescent mental illness, the crucial role of families and schools, and practical suggestions on how to make a meaningful positive difference. This thought-provoking presentation is emotionally impactful, humorous at times, honest and, most importantly, filled with hope.
As an advocate and educator on mental health and suicide prevention, and by sharing personal stories, Nic Newling has reached millions of people through live talks and media including Australian Story, Conversations on ABC Radio, and NBC’s The TODAY Show in New York. Since surviving his own mental illnesses but losing his brother to suicide, Nic strives to encourage sharing, listening and working together for positive change. After developing the world’s first online Positive Psychology intervention for young people at Black Dog Institute, he has since ventured out into sharing with high schools, communities and workplaces by founding the grassroots organisation The Champions.
We are honoured to host Nic at Carey and we hope you will consider coming along.
