From the Head of Junior School

The last of the Year 3 students completed performing their dance routines learnt during PE on Monday. Some of the Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed watching the performance, along with Year 3 parents. The younger students commented that they can’t wait to have the opportunity to learn to dance in Years 3 and 4.

Year 4 students had many highlights in their Outdoor Education Camp at Toolangi where they were challenged on balance courses, the flying fox, and constructing huts in teams. The camp program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn more about themselves and others in an exciting yet safe environment. We are fortunate to have such a well-resourced outdoor education program staffed by experts who were also well supported by the children’s classroom teachers.

I spent the last week in Auckland, New Zealand at the Independent Primary School Heads of Australia biannual conference followed by the Australian and New Zealand Primary Principals Conference. The theme of both conferences was ‘Knowledge in our hands – Wisdom in our hearts’. I left the week feeling affirmed that Carey’s approach to developing a positive learner places us very much on the right track for what is considered current best practice and, in many instances, we are much further ahead on the journey, which was pleasing.

As the Principal, Philip Grutzner, outlined in the link included in his article, there are exciting renovations planned for the Junior School to enhance the learning spaces for all students, as well as accommodating the extra Year 5 class in 2017. I look forward to sharing these plans with you shortly when the architects have completed the elevations.

School Report – Semester 1
This year your child’s School report will be sent home via your child in their school bag on Friday 17 June, rather than in the post. This will give families ample time to read the report prior to the Parent/Student/Teacher interviews which will be held from Monday 20 June to Friday 24 June. In looking closely at the report and the considered content, it should be a time to celebrate the learning journey of your child. The report should allow us all to reflect on the many positives as we all work together towards renewed learning goals for Semester 2.

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews
You will have received an email from the School this week with the details you need to book your Parent/Student/Teacher interview online. If you have any queries regarding your interview time, please contact Nicole Scott via email or on 9816 1245. Please remember that your child is expected to attend the interview for the first 10 minutes.

Absence from School during Term Time
With the term break fast approaching, I remind parents that if you are taking your child out of Junior School for an extended absence during term time we ask you to please forward a written request to me, in advance.
