We are a proudly inclusive community. Diversity matters to us.
We know that when LGBTIQ+ students feel supported, welcomed and accepted in their school environment, they experience better wellbeing and academic outcomes overall. All students deserve to feel safe at school, and our Pride and Gender Equity Groups are dedicated to ensuring this happens.
In addition to the student groups, Carey celebrates an annual Pride Week, has a presence every year at the Midsumma Festival Pride March and participates in the Interschool Conference on Sexual and Gender Diversity. Our students enthusiastically don rainbow shoelaces and bows for the yearly Pride Round in the APS, and we host a staff Pride Group who meet regularly to support the student group and the School in arranging activities and education opportunities for other staff.
Carey is one of three schools to partner with the University of Sydney on the Corridor Cultures research, looking at school cultures of gender and sexuality. Carey has been working closely with project lead, Dr Victoria Rawlings, Senior Lecturer and ARC DECRA Fellow at the university. The project aims to improve inclusivity and the student experience through proactive measures.
Every year, supported by the Old Carey Grammarians Association, Carey hosts an International Women’s Day breakfast where an inspiring alumni guest speaker talks to attendees about issues relating to gender, equality and intersectionality.
In 2024, we were honoured to welcome back Carey alum Hannah McNicol, PhD candidate and Cookson Scholar working with the University of Melbourne and the University of Manchester. Hannah has a special interest in International Development, especially in gender, equality and political theory. Read about Hannah on page 10 of Torch Winter 2024.
