Meet some of our alumni

Born with severely underdeveloped arms and legs as a result of exposure to chemical weapons, brothers Ahmed and Emmanuel lived for many years in an orphanage in war-torn Baghdad, Iraq. Ahmed, who attended Carey for Years 11 and 12 and graduated in 2012, is now a Paralympic swimmer whose aim is to show young athletes that, with the right support, anything can be achieved if you follow your dreams, work hard and never give up.When he was six, Ahmed and his brother were brought to Australia by Moira Kelly, whose foundation, Creating Hope, is dedicated to bringing sick children from around the world to Australia to ensure they receive sufficient medical care when local doctors are unable to treat them. Moira brought the brothers to their new home and later adopted them both.Once in Australia, Ahmed began to live a happy and fulfilling life including spending two years studying at Carey where he was able to pursue his passion for swimming.Ahmed first represented Australia in 2009 at the Oceania Paralympic Championships in Darwin. He competed in the 2010 Australian National Championships, finishing first in the 100-metre breaststroke event in world record time. In 2012, he represented Australia at the Summer Paralympics in four events.Ahmed has since competed in three Paralympic Games: London in 2012, Rio in 2016 and Tokyo in 2020, where he won a silver medal in the Men’s 150-metre individual medley.In a show of true determination, and while pursuing his sporting dreams, Ahmed completed a Bachelor of Arts at La Trobe University, majoring in Journalism. 'Everything is achievable if you put your mind to it', said Ahmed. 'You need to be patient and know that you will face challenges along the way, but if you work hard, you can fulfil your dreams'.Ahmed is currently working at the ABC as a content creator and with his mum at the Creating Hope Foundation.

After successfully studying medicine for three years, deferring, and then completing her first clinical year at the Alfred and Prince Henry's hospitals, Amanda Cole encountered the first major turning point in her career. She credits a sympathetic Dean of Medicine, who recognised that although she was succeeding academically, she was suppressing her passion for music and languages.Amanda completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) before embarking on a very different path: studying music, furthering her French, learning German and Italian, and training as a classical singer.When her father died suddenly in an accident, she was forced to reassess her future. 'I weighed up my desire for the life of an opera singer with my need for family and stability and was no longer so fixated on a life on the stage,' she says.She completed her music degree, along with a Diploma of Modern Languages, and pursued a career coaching opera singers in European languages. It was an exceptionally specialised field and, as she reflects, 'In hindsight, maybe a bit crazy given the decimation of the arts over the intervening few decades, especially European art in Australia', although her work was supported by the Churchill Fellowship Foundation.Another significant life change came following the death of her mother, who also passed away at a young age. Amanda moved to New Zealand with her partner, where she enjoyed a modest but rewarding solo singing career, completed a Master of Music Performance through the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, and welcomed the birth of her first child.She describes New Zealand as one of the best places in the world to have a baby. 'Babies are delivered in hospitals and homes, by midwives, with doctors being called in only when necessary,' she says. 'The post-partum support was incredible, which was particularly helpful given my lack of parents'.The day after her child was born, Amanda was offered a PhD scholarship at the University of Otago. She found that doctoral research complemented motherhood remarkably well, completing her PhD eight years later after relocating back to Australia, this time to Queensland.Her PhD led to the development of a book exploring the same area of research, examining the nexus between music, performance and education.Today, Amanda's diverse career spans research, education and performance. She is an Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University, teaches the International Baccalaureate at the Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) in Brisbane, and performs with one of Brisbane's leading vocal ensembles, Fusion. Alongside these professional pursuits, she balances family life as the mother of a teenager and the partner of an academic.Reflecting on her time at Carey, Amanda says moving to the School in Year 11 was a defining moment. 'It helped me to break out of my comfort zone and identify my strengths,' she says. 'It also gave me the confidence that I could adapt to change and overcome challenges. And perhaps most significantly, that my life and my career didn't need to take a standard path or fit the mould. As Robert Frost suggested, "Sometimes it's important to take the road less travelled".'

Boston Everitt joined Carey from the Gold Coast for the final two years of high school to study the International Baccalaureate (IB) while pursuing his passion for AFL. Graduating with the Class of 2024, he credits his time at Carey with playing a significant role in shaping the direction he has taken since.Following graduation, Boston commenced a Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, with aspirations of pursuing postgraduate medicine. However, in early 2025, after completing a pre-season with Williamstown Football Club in the VFL and training intermittently with St Kilda, he made the difficult decision to step away from AFL and pursue a new opportunity in American football as a punter. The decision marked a complete reset in his sporting journey, requiring him to learn an entirely new craft while balancing the demands of full-time university study.He quickly developed a disciplined routine, crediting the study habits and resilience developed through the IB at Carey with helping him manage the workload of biomedicine alongside intensive training with Inside20 Punting.In January 2026, Boston's journey took another unexpected turn when he received a phone call offering him a full scholarship to play American football and study at the University of Iowa. Within just 15 days, he had relocated to the United States and begun life on campus.Reflecting on the experience, Boston said, 'It was a rapid transition, but one that reinforced a mindset I've developed over time, that the biggest growth comes from stepping into the unknown, embracing change and taking opportunities even if you're uncertain about what's next.'Now studying pre-medicine while playing college football as a punter for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Boston has embraced the high-performance environment. He says the program's strong emphasis on excellence in both academics and football, combined with its proud culture and rich history, has made it an incredible experience.Looking back, Boston believes his time at Carey was instrumental in shaping both his mindset and work ethic. 'Balancing the IB and AFL pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me the importance of fully committing to whatever you pursue.'One quote continues to guide him: 'Only those who risk going too far can possibly find how far they can go.'Boston also remains closely connected to the Carey community and still keeps in touch with many of his school friends. As he looks ahead to the next chapter of his journey in the United States, he is already looking forward to returning home and reconnecting with them.

After graduating from Carey, Julia completed a Science degree at the University of Melbourne before undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma in Audiology. It was during this time that she discovered her true passion: working with babies and young children to help them hear better.Reflecting on what drew her to the profession, Julia says, 'There's something incredibly rewarding about finding out how well a little one can hear and then making a difference in their lives.'Julia began her career with the Health Department of Victoria, where she worked as part of a multidisciplinary team supporting children with developmental needs. After several years, she followed the well-trodden path to London, securing a position at St Thomas' Hospital, the historic home of Florence Nightingale. Her time there provided invaluable opportunities to expand her expertise and deepen her knowledge across the field of audiology.Upon returning to Melbourne, Julia joined Monash Medical Centre (now Monash Health), where she played an instrumental role in establishing its fledgling Audiology Department. Over the next 31 years, she witnessed and contributed to remarkable advancements in hearing healthcare.From pioneering new technologies to developing innovative techniques for testing the hearing of newborn babies, Julia was at the forefront of a rapidly evolving field. Working closely with families of deaf and hard-of-hearing infants, she helped improve early diagnosis and intervention, making a lasting difference in countless lives. During this time, she also completed a PhD investigating the development of brain responses to sound in babies and children, as well as getting married and raising her son.In 2021, Julia embraced a new challenge by joining the Bionics Institute as Clinical Lead for a team developing EarGenie®, a groundbreaking medical device for audiologists that uses light to measure the brain's hearing responses. The innovative technology aims to close critical gaps in understanding how well babies can hear, enabling more personalised hearing care long before infants are able to communicate what they hear.Julia is energised by the opportunities still to come. 'Life couldn't be more exciting, challenging and fulfilling right now,' she says. 'Just the other day, someone asked if I was thinking about retirement. My response? "Are you kidding? I'm just getting started!".'

After completing Year 12 at Carey in 2002, Ingrid found herself having to choose between two passions: a career in music or medicine. She settled on medicine and began her studies at Monash University. Despite enjoying her medical training and studies, her heart wasn’t in it, and for years Ingrid lived a double life – working weekends in the Emergency Department and spending the rest of their time conducting, performing and teaching. While completing her medical internship, Ingrid took on more conducting positions, before pausing medicine to study music formally. Finally, Ingrid made the decision to move to the United States to study music spending two life changing years completing a Masters of Music in Conducting with the inimitable conductor, Craig Kirchhoff, at the University of Minnesota.Since then, Ingrid has been busy working as a freelance conductor around Australia, and providing professional development to conductors and teachers globally through her own business, Conducting Artistry. In 2022, Ingrid made her conducting debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, whilst continuing her Artistic Director roles with the Victorian Youth, Symphony Orchestra, Bayside Chamber Orchestra and Crosswinds Ensemble.Ingrid was awarded the 2021 Rosemary &amp; John Hopkins Award for Conductors to create a High School Conducting Academy in conjunction with the University of Melbourne.In 2022, Ingrid was one of 10 participants in the Orchestra of the Americas Carlos Miguel Prieto Conducting Fellowship, working with mentors including Simone Young, Barbara Hannigan, Marin Alsop, Leonard Slatkin, Alexander Shelley and Carlos Miguel Prieto.

The ionic Australian breakfast spread, Vegemite, is famous for not only being a tasty savoury treat, but for its B-vitamin content and associated nutritional benefits. This is all thanks to Keith Farrer OBE, former Chief Scientist at Kraft Foods, where he developed methods for measuring vitamin B1 levels in food and for conserving B1 during the manufacturing and heat process of Vegemite. This breakthrough and others led to vast improvements in nutrition worldwide.Keith Farrer OBE graduated from Carey in 1933 as School Vice-Captain and recipient of the Meeks Medal. After leaving Carey, his connection to the School endured, and Keith served on the School Council, now known as the Carey Board, for 45 years. In recognition, Farrer House in the Kew ELC was named after him in 1980 and he was awarded the Carey Medal in 2009.Keith studied chemistry and metallurgy at the University of Melbourne, completing both a Bachelor and Master of Science (Chemistry). He completed his Doctor of Science in 1954 also at the University of Melbourne, and went on to become one of Australia's greatest food industry scientists.Throughout his career, Keith contributed to more than 140 scientific, technical and historical papers in journals and conference proceedings, and published eight books, including William Carey: Missionary and Botanist. Keith was on numerous scientific committees and assisted several government ministries and departments, ranging from defence and foreign affairs to education and science. He also undertook a long-standing secondment to the federal Department of Health as an adviser on food additives.Upon retiring from Kraft after 43 years, Keith represented Australia internationally by giving voluntarily of his time and expertise to raise nutritional standards in southeast Asian countries. In 1979, he was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.Keith passed away in 2012 at the age of 96.

Keith Farrer OBE

As the first female boundary rider for the AFL, Tiffany Cherry is an icon of Australian sports media. Being active in male-dominated sports, activities and jobs has led Tiffany to her current role of Head of Women and Girls Engagement at Golf Australia, where she drives female involvement in the sport. 'As a sports broadcaster with global experience, sports fan and marketing and communications executive, I've witnessed, first hand, the impact of the changing global landscape of gender equality on the sporting field’, Tiffany says.Tiffany graduated from Carey in 1989 before completing a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) at La Trobe University. Carey fostered Tiffany’s passion and interest in sport where she excelled as Athletics Captain. Ten years later, Tiffany represented Australia in hurdling at the 1999 World Triathlon Championships in Canada. She commenced her career in physiotherapy at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre, and with Richmond Football Club between 1995 and 1997 as the team’s physiotherapist.Tiffany’s career turned from physiotherapy to sports presenting and media when she was shocked to see a female journalist working alongside men in television sports media. Inspired to follow the same path, Tiffany created her own work experience to build her resume and reputation, including self-funding a trip to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and sending audio reports to Triple M. Her first secure role in media began shortly afterward, as a reporter on Seven Network’s Talking Footy program.Throughout her media career, Tiffany has co-hosted the coverage of numerous Olympic Games on behalf of the Seven Network and Foxtel, was one of the first hosts of the Fox Footy Channel, worked for ESPN and hosted SportsCentre in the US, presented weeknight sport on Sky News Australia and became the Multimedia Executive of the Richmond Football Club.Tiffany now runs her own business, Cherry Picked Productions, a video production and online distribution service, while also working full time at Golf Australia.

Revd Tim Costello AO is one of Australia’s leading advocates for social justice. He was CEO of World Vision Australia for 13 years and takes a prominent stance on issues such as gambling, homelessness, substance abuse and global poverty. He is now executive director of Micah Australia, a group of Australian churches advocating for social justice and an end to poverty, and holds many positions on advisory councils.After graduating from Carey in 1972, Tim went on to study law and education at Monash University before studying theology at the International Baptist Seminary in Rueschlikon, Switzerland. Upon returning to Australia, he completed a Master of Theology at the Melbourne College of Divinity.In 1984, Tim was ordained as a Baptist Minister and went on to establish an active ministry at St Kilda Baptist Church. Demonstrating his commitment to his community, he acted for a term as Mayor of St Kilda.In 1995, Tim served as a Minister at Collins Street Baptist Church where he founded Urban Seed, a Christian outreach service catering to the disadvantaged. Between 1999 and 2002 Tim was also the National President of the Baptist Union of Australia.In 2004, Tim began his role as CEO and Chief Advocate of World Vision Australia, which saw him on the ground at almost every major global disaster. Notably, after the Indian Ocean Tsunami of Boxing Day, 2004, Tim travelled immediately to the disaster area, where his presence and media profile contributed to raising more than $100 million. Following this, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his impact on the international aid, as well as for contributions to social justice and health and welfare.Tim’s many other accolades include being listed as one of Australia’s National Living Treasures; in 2004, he was named Victorian of the Year; in 2006, he was named Victoria’s Australian of the Year; in 2008, he won the Australian Peace Prize and was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University; and, in 2009, Tim was awarded the Carey Medal.
