It was an early start for the Junior Girls Gold Team, as they made their way to Assumption College in Kilmore. The team was greeted with crisp autumn air and frost on the fields, but they were ready to go! In respect for the Indigenous Football Round, the two teams gathered at the start of the game for an acknowledgment of country. The teams acknowledged the traditional custodians of the land, those of the Taungurung People, and paid respect to their rich cultures and to Elders past, present and future. This was a humbling experience and brought both teams together.

The first quarter saw Hayley Tan score the first goal, this set the tone for the rest of the game. Lara Mercorillo played a phenomenal game in Forward, making fantastic leads and attacking with grit. Milly White played an incredible game in Midfield, scoring four goals for the team. Ruby McCandlish was an excellent Back, laying hard tackles and intercepting handballs.

Taylor Austin and Piari Dhillon demonstrated excellent perseverance and resilience returning after a week of being sick with COVID-19. This week also saw Lily Anson step into the role of Captain. She did an incredible job providing encouragement both on and off the field, constructive feedback between quarters and an overall positive attitude. As such, we want to officially announce and congratulate Lily as the permanent Captain for the Carey Junior Girls Gold Team, 2022.

Overall, the whole team played an excellent game, came home with the win and got to enjoy a relaxing bus drive back to Carey.

Well done girls!
