Throughout this term, some of the Houses from Middle and Senior School are holding their Annual Chapel Services in the recently refurbished chapel, which is a truly inviting space. The theme of the services has been ‘Imagination’ and our speakers represent organisations that have made a profound impact for good. Each of the organisations came into being because someone imagined creating something that would meet a need. Each began in a small, almost insignificant, way. Hurdles were overcome and others caught the vision as the organisations began to fulfil the hopes of the founders.

How powerful is the gift of our imagination? When used for good, it can be a means of bringing great blessing to the lives of others. Yet, as with all gifts and abilities, there is the possibility that imagination will not be used for good. We see the evidence of this almost whenever we watch the news or read the papers.

Sitting in these chapel services I am inspired by those who imagined a better world and who had the courage and commitment to pursue their vision. We need more people like that. It does not have to be a big thing, but if we can imagine making something better so that others are helped, then may we do it. It is easier and less costly to accept that this is the ‘way things are’ but lives are not changed for the better with this approach.

A small way in which Carey is attempting to imagine a better world is through the Access and Equity Scholarship. With the support of our community, this scholarship provides an opportunity for a student to have a Carey education who would otherwise be unable to due to hardship or disadvantage. In the past, we have been grateful to be able to provide this scholarship to children of refugees and other students in need, who have loved their time at Carey and gone onto university to pursue their passions.

In order to continue providing this opportunity, we need support from the Carey community. Please visit the Community Giving page for information about how you can help.

May God inspire us all to have the courage to imagine something being better, and then have the commitment to bring about the change we would like to see.

God’s peace to you.
