Chamber Music at Carey
Chamber music, described by Catherine Bowen as ‘a conversation between friends’, gives musicians an opportunity to rehearse and perform in a more intimate context than a large ensemble. This year, we are inviting our musicians to express interest in taking part in Carey’s chamber music program. We will be offering a number of chamber music options including string quartets, piano trio/quartet/quintet, baroque ensemble, small vocal ensembles as well as brass, woodwind and percussion ensembles. Some of these groups will rehearse on a seasonal basis, and others will rehearse weekly throughout the year. All students involved in chamber music will be members of a core ensemble.

Students who wish to participate in this program are asked to fill out an expression of interest form, available from the performing arts office on the second level of the PAF.

Instrumental Lessons
The issue of rotation of instrumental music lessons through the timetable is something that arises frequently in a big school with a variety of school sections and timetable structures. I’d like to take this opportunity to clarify Carey’s policy in this space.

Lessons on a student’s first instrument will rotate throughout the day in accordance with the policy of individual school sections. For students in Years 11 and 12, lessons will be during study periods, at lunchtimes or before/after school. Students who learn more than one instrument at school will also have lessons on subsequent instruments outside the timetable.

Places outside the timetable are limited because of the number of students who need to be accommodated and also because music staff are involved in Carey’s extensive ensemble program at these times.

If you have any queries about this, or any other aspect of instrumental music at Carey, please refer to the Instrumental Music Handbook on Careylink, or contact me directly on nicholas.mulder@carey.com.au
