Even though we are now into the second month of 2021, it certainly feels like the start of the year as we return to school in force this week.

At the start of a new year, many people make the decision to change something in their lives in the form of New Year’s Resolutions. When we are not happy about something in our life, this provides the fantastic opportunity to start again. Sometimes things go wrong – it might be a fall out with a friend, a missed opportunity, a poor choice, a bad mood, a misread of a situation – whatever the circumstance, we all have the opportunity to start again. Perhaps this year you’d like to be a better friend, take on more responsibility, join a new sport team, change an attitude or adopt a new practice. No one can make these changes for you, but in our Carey environment, there are plenty of people to support you and help you.

On our first staff day last week, our Principal encouraged us to ensure that we make a list of ‘to be’ as well as ‘to do.’ What a great New Year’s Resolution. The idea of focussing more on who we are as people, noticing and appreciating the positives in life, rather than what we do, or even what we have!

I love to refer to the writing of Paul to the church in Philippi for my inspiration of how to be – wouldn’t it be great if we could all keep this way of living.

Philippians 4: 4–9

May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. I say it again: rejoice!

Show a gentle attitude toward everyone. The Lord is coming soon. Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.

In conclusion, my friends, fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. Put into practice what you learned and received from me, both from my words and from my actions. And the God who gives us peace will be with you.
