Media personality, food writer, cook, ‘vegelante’ and former Masterchef contestant Alice Zaslavsky recently presented to Year 8 Food Studies students during remote learning.

Alice’s goal is to encourage people of all ages to love food and to be educated about where food comes from, what it does to our bodies and how it connects us to the world around us. She is an advocate for including more vegetables in our diets and finding delicious ways to make sure we enjoy both cooking and eating them. She is a former teacher and is passionate about improving kids’ relationships with food.

Alice is most well-known for her award-winning books including In Praise of Veg, her online presence @aliceinframes, and for hosting ABC Radio Sunday Drive and SBS Food. She also writes for The Guardian and Broadsheet.

Our Year 8 Food Studies students were fortunate to learn from Alice as she offered advice and tips about food-related careers and writing a food review as part of their Breakfast Recipe and Review Task this term. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Alice presented digitally from her home, however her words of wisdom were nonetheless inspiring for students keen to know more about describing the sensory properties of food for their audience.

We are grateful to so often be able to bring in experts from around Australia and the world to enhance the real-world aspect of our students’ learning. Exposing students to varied perspectives and opportunities allows them to see their own futures and provide direction for fulfilling pathways throughout school and beyond. We hope the Year 8 Food Studies class were inspired and excited by Alice, and we thank her for her engaging presentation.
