Dear Families,

I am proud to share with you our Year 12 Class of 2023 results.

The Class of 2023 is a wonderful cohort of exceptional individuals, and we know they will each go on to do great things beyond Year 12. This group honoured their position as the Year 12 Class of our centenary by setting a benchmark for student culture at our school. It was a privilege to see their commitment and hard work play out across the course of this special year for our community.

We have seen each individual striving for excellence in their area of interest and we have enjoyed celebrating the diversity of talent that exists throughout the cohort. We have been very proud to watch the Class of 2023 develop a supportive learning culture over the year as they established a new level of commitment to, and demonstration of, our school values.

In addition to their personal achievements throughout the year, the Year 12 Class of 2023 achieved excellent academic results. The following is an overview of the combined results of both International Baccalaureate (IB) and Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) cohorts:

  • 3.9% of ATARs were above 99 (in the top 1% of the state)
  • 18.6% of ATARs were above 95 (in the top 5% of the state)
  • 35.3% ATARs were above 90 (in the top 10% of the state)
  • 60.1% of all ATARs were above 80 (in the top 20% of the state)
  • The median Carey ATAR is 84.5.

We are pleased to be able to offer both VCE and IB pathways at Carey and, in doing so, enable our students to exercise the agency to choose a learning program that both suits their interests and needs and allows them to work toward achieving personal excellence.

Our 2023 IB Duces of Carey are Luka Best, Charan Sukumar and Brent Yang, who achieved perfect IB scores of 45 and an equivalent ATAR of 99.95.

Our 2023 VCE Dux of Carey is Chloe Campbell, who achieved an ATAR of 99.8.

We congratulate Chloe, Luka, Charan and Brent for their outstanding achievements and dedication.

In addition, we congratulate IB student Jada Taylor, who also received a perfect IB score of 45 and an ATAR of 99.85.

We also sincerely congratulate the seven other IB and VCE students who received an ATAR of 99 or above and join our duces and recipients of IB perfect scores as Carey’s highest performing students: Andy Dong, Sophie Kondogiannis, Rachel Lou, Grace Moore, Emma O’Neill, Oliver Treloar and Jeremy Wong.

Additional IB results highlights include:

  • The median IB ATAR is 95.3
  • 97% of our IB students achieved an IB score of 30+ which is equivalent to an ATAR of 81.25+
  • Over 50% of our IB students achieved an IB score of 38+ which is an ATAR of 94.75+
  • Our IB average score of 37.3, which translates to an ATAR of 93.90, is well above the worldwide average score of 29.06
  • 67.1% of IB subject scores were 6 or 7 out of a possible 7.

Additional VCE results highlights include:

  • The median VCE ATAR is 79.85
  • 11.33% of VCE study scores were over 40
  • There were two VCE perfect study scores of 50, both achieved by Emma O’Neill in Ancient History and Psychology
  • 12 VCE students were awarded the VCE Baccalaureate in recognition of their successful completion of both a higher-level mathematics subject and a language as part of their VCE program.

I am pleased to announce that 100% of our VCE cohort has already received an offer for a tertiary pathway beyond school, with more than 80% of those students receiving an offer for their first or second preference. Given our outstanding IB results, we expect this trend will continue for our IB students when their tertiary offers are made next Friday 12 January.

Beyond the numbers, there are many wonderful examples throughout this cohort of individuals who have achieved beyond their own expectations, often overcoming challenging situations in the process. Their results reflect their commitment and determination over many years. In partnership with our parents, our sincere thanks go to our outstanding team of teaching and professional staff for their expertise, dedication and support of our students, not just at the Year 12 level, but throughout each student’s entire Carey journey. We know our students, staff and parents are committed to enabling each student to achieve their best.

We recognise that our students are more than the sum of their academic results and are confident they enter the next stage of their lives well prepared to take on challenges with courage, compassion and curiosity.

We congratulate each member of our Year 12 Class of 2023 and wish them all the very best for their future endeavours. We look forward to celebrating these academic achievements at the Senior School Celebration Assembly on Friday 23 February 2024.

With best wishes,

Jonathan Walter
Principal
