Over the recent holiday period, it was great to see several students involved in high level community sport, as highlighted below. There was also a wonderful Carey Open Sport Clinic, held out at Bulleen on Friday 18 and Monday 21 June. The clinic had Football (AFL), Netball and Soccer sessions co-ordinated and delivered by our expert Heads of Football (Gavin Brown), Netball (Kirra Parks) and Soccer (Manny Koutroulis), with the days running from 9.00am to 1.00pm.

The clinic was well attended by Carey students across the Junior and Middle School, with highlights for student including, but not limited to:

  • learning new skills and drills
  • meeting new friends
  • significant individual skill improvement/development witnessed over the two days by majority of the students involved.

There will be future Carey Open Sport Clinics later this term and in the Term 3 holidays – stay tuned for further information and advertising.

It was wonderful to see many students in the football program put their hand up to play in practice matches over the break against a touring Scotch College from South Australia. Scotch College SA produced a Year 10 Boys team to play our Year 10s and a Girls First Team to play our girls. Both matches were highly competitive and Scotch was extremely grateful to us for hosting the games, particularly given it was during our holiday period.

The following students are commended and celebrated for their recent achievements:

  • Stephanie (7C) made the SSV U12 Soccer team.
  • Elliot (8M) recently competed in the 2025 U14 National Indoor Cricket Championships in Perth, where he captained the Victorian side. Whilst the Victorian’s were unlucky to lose the finals to NSW, Elliot was named in the All-Australian team, after his wonderful performances throughout the championships!
  • Jasmine (9D) was selected in the SSV U16 State Basketball team to play in the National Championships, held in Moreton Bay, QLD from 26 July to 1 August 2025.
  • Macey (9D) has been selected for Victoria Storm in the U16s National Touch Football Championships, to be held in Coffs Harbour later this year.
  • Abbey (10M) and Alice (11M) were involved at the U/17 Netball Australia National Squad Camp during the holidays.
  • Ruby (10F) represented Victoria Blue in the U16 National Soccer Championships. Victoria Blue won the championship 1–0 over NSW Sky!
  • Raph (10F) represented Victoria Silver in the U16 National Soccer Championships.
  • Oliver (10SU), Lachie (10ST), Ryder (10M) and Josh (10F) played for the U16 Vic Metro Football Team in the National Championships over the Term 2 holidays. Jack (10M) was selected in the squad but unfortunately, he was injured and unavailable to play. Vic took out the National Championships!
  • Alice (11M) represented Victoria Storm in the Women’s U20 National Touch Football Championships.
  • Max (12ST) and Zac (12SU) both played for Victoria Metro in the recent AFL National Championships.

A wonderful story of resilience and perseverance

On Sunday 20 July, former Carey student and Vice-Captain of the 2019 First XVIII Premiership side Ben Jepson made his AFL debut for the Gold Coast Suns. The 23-year-old earnt a spot on the Suns list after an impressive pre-season performance.

Ben played alongside current AFL superstars in Noah Anderson (GC), Matt Rowell (GC), Nick Daicos (Coll) and Karl Worner (Frem) during the 2019 premiership season and took out the team’s Best and Fairest.

Ben moved to the Gold Coast for a lifestyle change after spending three seasons with Coburg and one season with Southport in the VFL. His journey has not been an easy one after missing selection in the 2019 AFL draft. After several seasons playing for Coburg, where he won the 2023 Best and Fairest, Ben was selected by the Suns as a supplemental selection period (SSP) pick after his first season at Southport, where he came second in the club’s best and fairest in 2024.

The AFL is full of inspirational stories, and Ben is proof that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams!

We look forward to finishing off the wonderful winter sport season over the next couple of weeks, with some premierships at the top level up for grabs.
