‘This is the first school band I have worked with in Australia, so this has become a core memory for me. Thank you.’ These words were spoken by Associate Professor in Music from the University of Melbourne, Jaclyn Hartenberger, to the Symphonic Band at the end of their workshop at music camp this weekend. As I write this article, Jaclyn is now working with the Wind Symphony, all of whom are captivated by her energy and enthusiasm for the music. The band is working on a Latin inspired piece called ‘El Camino Real’ and are being encouraged to ‘describe’ the music through how they approach melody and rhythm. Inherent in that direction is the knowledge that music is a powerful tool for storytelling; that through the ‘dots on the page’ these young musicians have share Spanish idioms of Latin dance styles – the flamenco and fandango – taking the listener on an exciting journey through colour and texture, rhythmic energy and beautiful legatos.

Senior Ensembles camp is a true highlight of the year for the music staff. We bring away highly motivated young musicians who work hard all weekend to bring their Term 3 programs to life. But it is not all about the music. It is about the collaborative and supportive community who share their breaks and their meals together, who demonstrate support and care for each other. The venue where the camp is held has a giant Jenga set – so this year camp was also about playing Jenga where apparently, they were only allowed to use their feet to move the blocks. No end of talent from this group of young musos!

The Symphony Orchestra worked with orchestral conductor, Nathan Scerri, in a three-hour workshop last Friday afternoon. Nathan served as Musical Director of the Victorian State Schools Spectacular for many years and has a wealth of knowledge working in an orchestral setting. Nathan discussed concepts relating to balance, texture and articulation, with the students receptive to his directions.

Our groups are currently preparing for performances at the Victorian Schools Music Festival and we will share details of those performances with our community soon.
