Milestones so far this year have included the launch of new initiatives directed to informing our school community about the extraordinary range of wildlife native to the Boroondara district. The project aims to demonstrate the huge part these species have to play in enriching our lives and promoting the wellbeing of our student body, and the responsibility we all share for the care and protection of our local environment. Our weekly Wurundjeri Wildlife Personality Profiles on the digital screens in Middle and Senior School, for example, are designed to help students and staff become familiar with the characteristics and habitat requirements of local species including those which, sadly, are currently absent due to the impacts of urbanisation.
The Eco-Warriors’ signature program, the Wildlife Garden Project, is also moving ahead with students participating in early stages of the garden design under the guidance of our head gardener, Nic Fiddelears. Our major fundraising effort for the term was a casual clothes day that raised more than $700 to be used for the purchase of plants and equipment for the garden. We were delighted recently to receive a special visit from some lizard friends, including the baby blue tongues which we hope will become part of our wildlife garden community.
Finally, we have welcomed a number of fabulous new student members from both Middle and Senior School who are already having a major impact on our program. We are hopeful that this year will see us achieve some major goals and encourage more people in our community to support our fight for a kinder, healthier, happier future.
