On Wednesday, Carey’s Year 9 Art students took part in an exciting excursion to Monash University, where they participated in a hands-on workshop led by master printmaker Trent Walter, founder of the print studio and publishing house Negative Press in Brunswick.

Held in the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) gallery’s education lab, the workshop gave students the opportunity to cut, paste, collage, draw and experiment with printmaking techniques. Each student created a unique page that contributed to a collaborative ‘artist book’, using materials such as newspapers, found text and their own ideas to explore both analogue and digital approaches to artmaking.

In addition to the workshop, students toured Monash’s public art collections and visited the studios and workshops of first- and second-year Monash art students, gaining valuable insight into the creative processes at the university level.

The day was a rich and inspiring experience, encouraging students to experiment with new forms of artistic expression and deepening their understanding of contemporary art practices. Excursions like this not only spark creativity but also broaden students' perspectives on the possibilities within our Middle School Art program and the partnership we have established with MUMA through Carey’s Artist in Residence program.
