Who we are matters. The decisions we make, the actions we take and the words we speak all hold significance. This semester, a significant project across the Junior School has been the co-creation of ‘Our Values in Action’, a document that captures and outlines the behaviours and attributes of a Carey student. We view this project as the next step in making the often-invisible expectations associated with the Carey values of Care, Respect and Growth clearly understood and articulated for students from Prep to Year 6.
The strength and power of Our Values in Action lie in its ability to create a shared language, establish consistent expectations and provide a steady baseline for how students embody these values in all situations and learning environments. Nothing is left to chance: students will engage in specific lessons at the commencement of next term that are designed to support the development of their character and underlying behaviours. This will ultimately foster a Junior School culture like no other.
Unlike simple behaviour management and behaviour correction models, we at Carey believe that deep and lasting character and culture development stem from a subtle yet powerful shift. We don’t aim to create merely a compliant, rule-following culture. Instead, we aspire to offer a better, fresher and more empowering narrative of who each student can become when they enter the gates of Junior School and move far beyond. Our Values in Action will propel our community forward – not as rule followers, but as culture setters.
