Our Middle School Girls Football Team has represented Carey in the Herald Sun Shield with great success for two years in a row! The Shield is Victoria’s longest-running school football competition, where the top school football teams in the state battle it out for the number one position.

On Saturday 3 August, the team defeated Caulfield Grammar on Spicer Oval by 29 points, winning them the AFL Victoria’s Intermediate Division 1 school football competition in the APS. Lily Parker, Ruby Kaye, Izzy Teoh, Ava Elliot, Daniella Kelvie and Chloe Carnell were the best players on the day.

This win against Caulfield made the Carey Girls the team of choice for the APS to nominate for the Herald Sun Shield competition, for the second year in a row!

After the Shield semi-final, where they ‘blitzed Ballarat Grammar with the final score 14.8 (92) to 0.3 (3)’ according to AFL Victoria, the team went on to play against Rowville Secondary College in the Intermediate Girls Division 1 Grand Final on Tuesday 13 August at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne.

The Carey Year 9 and 10 team played with pride, courage and determination. At three-quarter time they were down 30–19 and had the wind and a chance to seize the game in the final quarter. Carey played well but Rowville were too good in the end, winning 52–19. Best players on the day were Lara Mercorillo, Sophia Davey, Ruby Kaye, Emma Johnston and Ava Elliot.

The Carey Middle School girls present a strong front year on year. Our 2024 Intermediate group has 22 wins and four losses over three years, and since the inception of Girls Football at Carey in 2018, the Middle School team has won 43 games out of 49.

We look forward to seeing the girls football program at Carey continue to grow!
