Flag Football: a growing sport and an inaugural success!

The growing popularity of Flag Football was on full display earlier this month, with Carey students enjoying a fantastic opportunity to participate in a Years 7 and 8 Flag Football Gala Day hosted at Haileybury's Brighton Campus on Wednesday 9 September.

In the lead-up to the NFL Showcase at the MCG featuring the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams, the LA Rams worked in consultation with the APS to deliver the inaugural event, aimed at introducing and growing the sport to APS schools.

Carey entered four teams in the competition, comprising three boys’ teams and one girls’ team. Throughout the day, students competed in multiple matches, developed their understanding of the game and embraced the opportunity to learn a new sport in a fun and engaging environment. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, sportsmanship and teamwork displayed by all participants.

There was tremendous excitement surrounding the event. Our four teams, the Falcons (Girls), Panthers (Year 7/8 Boys), Steelers (Year 8 Boys) and Raiders (Year 7 Boys), represented Carey superbly throughout the day. The improvement shown by all players from their opening game to their final match was outstanding, and coaches Mr Jewell and Mr Post were incredibly proud of the effort, resilience and teamwork demonstrated by every student involved.

A huge congratulations to the Carey Panthers, who were crowned champions of the boys’ competition after defeating one of Xavier College's teams in a thrilling Grand Final. Played in front of students and staff from participating schools, complete with music, live commentary and cheerleaders, the Panthers rose to the occasion to become the inaugural Rams Under-14 Boys Champions. 

Special congratulations also go to Ollie, named MVP in the Boys Tournament in Offence, and Cooper, Boys Tournament MVP in Defence. 

The success of the day was not only measured by results but by the excitement and enjoyment shown by our students. We hope this experience continues to inspire participation in what is one of the world's fastest-growing sports.
