Term 4 began with Jazz in the Quad, and what a fabulous night it was. Featured on the evening were our youngest jazz groups through to our senior groups, all creating a great vibe with their performances and showing their musical creativity through improvised solos. Guest trumpeter Thien Pham was so inspirational. His work with the bands was exceptional and the students and families alike were truly wowed by his playing. A highlight of the evening was the opportunity to hear a student composition from Isaac, ably played by the Big Band with Henry as a featured vocal soloist. Fletcher was awarded the Nick Mulder bursary for his growth and development in the field of jazz.

As I sat back and enjoyed such a great evening of music, I reflected on what being involved in music means to many, if not all, of our students. The support and encouragement through the evening was wonderful to witness, and there would not have been a student there who did not understand that they were part of a pretty special community.

Scrolling through my phone recently I came across this observation:

What music teachers get to see:

Lost kids who find their home

Worried kids who find their safe space

Lonely kids who find their friends

Awkward kids who find their clan

Shy kids who find their voice

Expressive kids who find their outlet

Talented kids who find their stage

Musical kids who find their calling;

Music teachers get to see this each and every day.

It’s awesome. (Vaughan Fleischfresser)

We do get to see it every day, in every rehearsal, at every concert. Music has the capacity to bring people together and create a community that supports, encourages and shares a passion. How lucky that, as teachers, we get to be part of that.
