Leadership is often associated with titles and positions of responsibility, but at Carey we believe leadership begins with self-awareness, service and the ability to positively influence those around us. This belief sits at the heart of the new Year 10 Zero Leadership Module, an innovative four-part program developed by a team led by Sally Nelson, Head of Integrated and Immersive Learning; Erin Hall, Acting Year 10 Co-ordinator; and Jason Ross, Student Wellbeing Co-ordinator and Carey Zero Mentor.

Designed as a leadership preparation program, the module helps students explore who they are, how they work with others and the many ways they can contribute to their community. Before beginning the program, students complete a bespoke leadership survey that encourages reflection on qualities such as self-awareness, communication, collaboration, empathy, resilience and future leadership aspirations. The survey serves as a starting point for meaningful conversations about personal growth and leadership potential.

The module then takes students on a journey from understanding themselves to putting leadership into action. Through activities such as creating a personal ‘Leadership User Manual’, participating in collaborative challenges and developing plans to positively impact the Carey community, students learn that leadership is something everyone can demonstrate.

Recently, half of the Year 10 cohort participated in the program’s first Leadership Panel, hearing directly from members of the newly appointed 2027 Student Executive Leadership Team. The panel forms part of Carey's evolving leadership structure, which expands leadership opportunities by increasing the number of portfolio-based roles available to Year 12 students.

Year 10 students asked thoughtful questions about the application process, how to prepare for leadership roles, the qualities required to lead effectively and the challenges that come with leadership. The responses were insightful and eloquently expressed, consistently highlighting a common theme: leadership is not about personal recognition, but about serving others and creating positive change.

As one of the student leaders reflected, ‘A good leader focusses on bringing people together, creating an environment of trust and inclusion, and making sure every voice feels valued.’

The Year 10 Zero Leadership Module is an outstanding initiative that equips students with the confidence, skills and mindset to make a meaningful contribution to the Carey community, both now and in the years ahead. Through programs such as this, we continue to nurture a culture where leadership is accessible to all and where every student is empowered to make a difference.
