This exciting project, a collaboration between Carey Baptist Grammar School and Making Media, offered an in-depth look into the lives of former students, providing both inspiration and insight for current learners, and will be aired on LIVE FM later this year.
The program began with a day-long journalism workshop in August, led by Ralph Barba of Making Media. This workshop was designed to equip students with the skills they needed to conduct engaging and professional interviews. From understanding the nuances of journalism to mastering the technical aspects of radio broadcasting, students gained hands-on experience that was pivotal for the interviews that followed.
Following the workshop, students put their newly acquired skills to the test as they conducted 30-minute interviews with a selection of Carey alumni. The theme of these interviews, Leadership Lab, focussed on exploring leadership development opportunities on campus, alumni leadership journeys and perspectives on leadership in clubs and organisations. This theme offered current students valuable insights into how these alumni navigated leadership roles and made an impact in various spheres of their lives.
The success of Carey Live would not have been possible without the generous participation of our alumni. Sharing their leadership experiences and reflections offered current students a window into the diverse paths their futures might take. Thank you to:
The interviews were conducted by an enthusiastic group of students from various year levels, including Alex, Claire, Lucy and Jackson from Year 9; Mac, Elliott, Sophie, Samantha, Yana, Aphrodite and Ishika from Year 10; Jack and Angela from Year 11; and Harry, Montgomery, Kiana and Louie from Year 12.
Learn more about Carey Live
These students represent the next generation of potential journalists and media professionals, and their involvement in Carey Live offered them an invaluable platform to showcase their abilities. Year 10 student Aphrodite said, ‘I enjoyed working with people that I don’t really know across Middle School and Senior School, as well as learning about how to make a good podcast that can get young people excited.’ Similarly, Year 9 student Jackson said, ‘The radio experience was amazing. Meeting new people and trying something different is always a great opportunity. I’ve learnt so much and gained a new skill and enjoyed sharing that knowledge with other people.’
The final interviews will be broadcast on LIVE FM radio, with the exact date confirmed later this year. This broadcast will not only highlight the achievements and stories of our alumni but also celebrate the talents and hard work of our students and all they learnt across the two days. We look forward to sharing these stories with the broader community and celebrating the ongoing legacy of Carey’s remarkable alumni and students!
