The beginning of the new school year is an exciting and busy time. The first weeks are also an important time for building connections, reinforcing positive learning habits and supporting student wellbeing. In addition to starting classes and joining or returning to a Mentor Group and co-curricular activity group, students participate in a range of programs designed to strengthen engagement and community during the first fortnight of term.

These activities recognise the close relationship between wellbeing and learning. Activities that are focussed on connection, goal setting and community help students feel supported, confident and ready to engage with the opportunities and challenges of the year ahead. When learning and wellbeing are aligned, students are best placed to flourish academically, socially and personally.

The Year 12 Formal last Saturday night is just one such example. Others include the Year 12 ‘Last First Day’ breakfast hosted by the Senior School Parents Association: a time for Year 12s to catch up with each other and share stories from the holidays. The breakfast was followed by a Year 12 Assembly when our School Captains spoke with feeling about our values, the sense of identity within their year level, the responsibilities of all Senior School students and the opportunities ahead of them this year.

Last Wednesday, Year 10 students participated in Connection Day, spending time as a year level and within their Zero Mentor Groups to strengthen relationships and build a sense of belonging.

This week, students across year levels attended age-appropriate sessions with drug and alcohol educator Paul Dillon, who shared current information and practical strategies to support student wellbeing and care for one another. Paul’s presentation was part of the Year 12 Connection Day, which also included a Chapel Service, goal setting art activity, IB and VCE briefings and fun activities at Bulleen.

Together, these experiences contribute to a positive and supportive school environment, reinforcing strong foundations for learning both inside and beyond the classroom.
