With Term 3 almost finished, there are so many things to celebrate in the Performing Arts department. Our students are remarkable with what they commit to, and the grace with which they manage it all. I admire their commitment to and energy, and their determination to always give their absolute best.

With plates crashing, knives chopping, soup boiling and seven different languages, The Kitchen was an absolute treat to watch. The Senior School play never disappoints and the energy emanating off the stage had the audience on the edge of their seats. Congratulations to Tim Schwerdt, Mark Dickinson and the cast for their work on the play, and for creating such an immersive space in the MGH.

The Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSFM) is a feature of Term 3 for our ensembles. With most of the performances finished, it is great to report our students were wonderful ambassadors for the School and performed with energy and excellent attention to detail. The clinicians who worked with each group on stage were highly complimentary of their playing, and our students were responsive to the directions they gave while offering different perspectives.

The following awards were achieved:

  • Bel Canto (JSK) – Gold
  • Symphony Orchestra – Platinum
  • Wind Band – Platinum
  • Concert Band – Platinum
  • Symphonic Band – Platinum
  • Wind Symphony – Platinum

With Platinum being the highest award that can be achieved, the music staff and ensemble directors are understandably very proud of the students in these ensembles. In particular, thank you to the Year 12s, for whom these were their last VSMF performances, for the years you have given to the program. Your leadership has been greatly appreciated.

Best wishes to our three Jazz Bands as they perform at VSFM this week.

The opportunity to perform at such events is important for student and ensemble growth. Sharing their work with an audience after weeks in the rehearsal rooms provides a positive outlet and a truly rewarding experience.
