In the second last week of Term 1 this year, Year 6 students of Carey Baptist Grammar School's Junior School – Donvale undertook an education tour of the national capital, Canberra. While on this tour all students participated in a variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship Education. To assist our school and you in meeting the cost of the educational experience, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards the travel expenses incurred. This newsletter article to parents is part of the accountability requirements as set down by the Commonwealth Government and the contribution is paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion.

The students are appreciative of the important establishments and prominent landmarks they visited during the field experience such as Parliament House, Old Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Electoral Education Centre and a number of places of interest, including Government House, High Court of Australia, National Museum of Australia, National Gallery of Australia, National Film and Sound Archives, Australian Institute of Sport, Royal Australian Mint, National Capital Exhibition, National Dinosaur Museum, National Science and Technology Centre (QUESTACON), Mount Ainslie Lookout and Parliamentary Triangle Viewing Platform, and various Diplomatic Missions and Embassies.

Furthermore, the students had the pleasure and privilege of meeting our Federal Member of Parliament, the Honourable Mr Keith Wolahan (Menzies Electorate), together with the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC.

We trust that this wonderful educational tour was an ideal culmination to a rich learning journey and certainly a most rewarding experience for all students, and we would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.
