The coop, built with sustainability in mind, provides a safe and comfortable home for our feathered friends. Students have played a key role in the project, ensuring the chooks have everything they need to settle in. Now, they’re fully involved in the daily care of the hens – feeding them, cleaning the coop and collecting the eggs. Through these hands-on activities, students are gaining valuable experience in animal care and the benefits of fresh eggs.
After an exciting school-wide vote, our hens have officially been named Peckachu, Nuggets, Kentucky, Feathers, Popcorn and Chickpea.
We’re also excited to announce that two of our hens are already laying! The first egg was found just last week, and it sparked a wave of excitement across the school. Our students can’t wait to discover more eggs in the coming days, as they start to take part in the fun and rewarding process of collecting them.
Teachers and students are excited about the many ways the chickens will contribute to our Kitchen Garden program. Not only will they provide eggs for use in cooking classes, but they’ll also play a vital role in our composting system, helping reduce food waste while enriching our garden’s soil.
This project is a wonderful example of hands-on learning and sustainability in action. Keep an eye on the coop next time you visit the garden – you might just see some happy hens pecking about, enjoying their new home!
