In Middle School, the heartbeat of our culture finds itself not only in the Performing Arts, The Witches and the Theatre Showcase, on the sports field or in the classroom, but in the quotidian moments of kindness, responsibility and connection that quietly shape our young people. The Middle School is a highly energised place where students collaborate, debate, design, rehearse and harmonise. What a wonderful space in which to grow!
At any one moment we see individuals working, pairs collaborating and large groups progressing to create ripples that ebb and flow through Carey. At Carey, we are deeply committed to a holistic education that nurtures academic growth, whilst developing the social, emotional, spiritual, physical and ethical foundations that our students need to flourish. Carey provides rich opportunities to flourish. Every day, our students practise the Complex Competencies that will serve them well beyond school: acting ethically, communicating effectively, exercising agency, working collaboratively and thinking deeply.
It is with this similar holistic lens that we support the government’s important wellbeing initiative: the social media delay, effective 10 December. This initiative invites our young people to engage with the world, each other and to seek out new adventures. It is an invitation to look up and embrace life with its freedoms and journeys of exploration. Moreover, summer is an ideal time to seek out these escapades, to enjoy the outdoors, to catch up with friends whilst playing cricket in the park, or to listen to free music at Federation Square. There are many opportunities to be had during the summer break. Books make the most fabulous Christmas presents: a novel world for escape! Our Carey students deserve stronger face-to-face relationships, more positive learning experiences and the ability to thrive through adventure.
The social media delay aligns with our commitment to student wellbeing, quality teaching practise and our mobile phone policy. It is an act of care that is proactive, thoughtful and centred upon the long-term prosperity for each student. Each young person deserves the gift and freedom of time to just be! I am so grateful for the many families who already expressed their support and are working towards the social media delay.
Throughout Term 4, I was reminded again of how deeply our Middle School community values connection. The Fun Run at Bulleen brought colour, movement and joyful energy, with students cheering one another over the finish line. In addition, the House Theatre Games was authentically delightful, with the humour and improvisation that showed our students willing to say, ‘Yes… and’. These moments highlight the values of Carey: the rippled reflection of students encouraging each other, building their confidence that supports a foundational understanding of themselves and others.
I encourage our Middle School families to embrace the fruitfulness of summer and the social occasions that shine throughout. Whether your plans involve travel, time at home or simple days in the sunshine, I hope the weeks ahead provide opportunities for rest, connection and adventure.
On behalf of Carey Middle School, we wish you all a safe, restful and joyful summer break.
We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026 for another year of Care, Respect and Growth.
