A colleague recently shared a newspaper article with me called ‘Good for the Soul’, a discussion surrounding the power of music in life. The author references Paul Keating who stated, ‘I think music is the highest form of the arts. Music has a direct impact on the psyche’. We often listen to music ‘in passing’; it is on in the car, in shops, elevators, television, movies. But when is the last time you stopped and just listened – sat in stillness and just let the sounds of your favourite composer or artist surround you with its warmth and power. One of my favourite works is the Adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. This is not background music; this is music that demands you sit still and listen. This is music that asks you to hear every nuance, phrase, swell, moment of counterpoint. It demands your attention and takes you on a journey of incredible beauty.
So, as we embark on the holiday season, my challenge for you (homework if you like!), is to treat your psyche to that moment of stillness, where you simply stop and listen. Let the beauty and power of your favourite music surround you in a moment of calm amidst the holiday madness.
On behalf of the Performing Arts department, I wish you all the very best for a happy, safe and calm holiday season. We all look forward to many new experiences with our ensembles next year.
