When assembly day arrives, the Middle School community moves with purpose. At the sound of the altered bell, 780 students and 50 staff members make their way to the MGH – no small feat, especially when you add more than 50 parents, numerous musicians and guest speakers to the mix. It’s a carefully choreographed procession, with student leaders and teachers guiding the way. As students filter into the auditorium, an excited hum fills the air, voices bouncing off the walls in anticipation of what’s to come.
Then, like magic, the energy shifts. The soft strains of a piano, or sometimes a full musical ensemble, signal the beginning. Teachers take their seats, students settle in, and the lights dim. Whether it’s the Leadership Assembly, where new student leaders step into the spotlight, or the Awards Assembly, where achievements are met with well-earned applause, the ritual remains the same. The captains step forward for the Acknowledgment of Country, and suddenly, the room is united in focus and purpose.
Already this year, we’ve celebrated remarkable student leaders and honoured outstanding achievements, with proud parents in the audience adding to the atmosphere of importance. The music soars, guest speakers inspire and students share in moments of motivation and recognition. There’s even a touch of Hogwarts flair, as staff don their ceremonial gowns, bringing an extra sense of tradition to the moment.
But our sense of connection doesn’t stop with the major assemblies. Every Wednesday, a dynamic rotation of year level gatherings keeps the spirit alive. One year group attends an official Year Level Assembly in the IWA, another engages in thoughtful reflection during Chapel, and a third takes part in our newest initiative, the entirely student-led Forum, held in the aptly named Forum. This vibrant mix of structured assemblies, teacher guidance, spiritual exploration and student voice ensures that every student is engaged, inspired and heard.
Middle School Assemblies are more than just events on the calendar; they are the heartbeat of our community. They bring us together to celebrate, reflect and grow, reinforcing the values that make our school not just a place of learning, but a place of belonging.
