One of the best moments in a music department is when all of the beginner instrumental students play in their ensemble together for the first time. What a glorious noise the 60-plus members of the wind band make when they play their first notes together. The strings and guitars might not be as loud, but the sound is still something to delight in. You might think I am joking, but I really am not. The sound we hear in that moment is the future of the program and it is so very exciting.

One of the many strengths of the music program here at Carey is that we recruit for balance. The process ensures that there are the right number of instruments in each section. In doing this, we are able to guarantee that the beginner experience is as effective as possible. If we started every band with just flutes and percussion, the students would not gain a positive experience; likewise, a string group without cellos would lack depth. This insistence on balance also ensures that as the students move through the program, their positive ensemble experience is maintained.

The Senior Ensembles Concert on 17 March provided excellent performances from our groups. With strings, choirs, wind band, big band and a saxophone soloist, there was certainly something for everyone and the standard this early in the term is very encouraging. I would like to share a comment made on the evening by Deputy Principal – Years 7–12, Jake Plaskett, who said, ‘The arts remind us of what we have in common, rather than what sets us apart. Tonight’s performance is a testament not only to the talent and dedication of our students, but also to the spirit of collaboration and community that defines our school. Each note played reflects hours of practice, resilience and teamwork, supported by passionate staff and families’.

Term 2 will start with the Vocal Septet, Stage Band and Big Band heading to Mt Gambier for Generations in Jazz. The groups have been rehearsing with excellent engagement to master the test pieces and their own choice works. We wish them all the best for an exciting and rewarding weekend. Following that, Hibbert Strings and Concert Band will head to Rutherford Park in Blampeid to undertake Autumn Music Camp, partaking in sectionals, full rehearsals and other activities in a busy but important weekend of music making.

It has been lovely to see so many of our community supporting and enjoying the Senior School Musical, The Drowsy Chaperone. Congratulations to all involved on a great show. A well-earned rest is not too far away!
