International Women’s Day (IWD), held annually on 8 March, is a global celebration recognising the achievements of women and advocating for gender equality. The 2026 theme, Balance the Scales, called for a renewed commitment to equity and justice. It reflects the belief that every woman and girl, regardless of background or identity, should feel safe, be heard and have the opportunity to shape her own future. While progress continues, this theme acknowledges that significant challenges remain, including gender-based violence, systemic inequities and barriers to justice experienced by many across Australia and around the world.

At Carey, this year’s IWD was marked through a series of events and initiatives across the whole week, creating space for reflection, learning and meaningful connection among students, staff and alumni.

A diverse program of activities was designed to spark thoughtful conversation, encourage participation and deepen understanding across all year levels. From creative initiatives to reflective discussions and community-driven efforts, the week fostered a strong sense of engagement and shared purpose. Highlights from throughout the week included:

  • a Community IWD Dinner featuring keynote speakers Melinda Crole (1986) and Amanda Rayner (2008), a mother-daughter alumni duo who shared reflections on how experiences of equality have evolved across generations
  • gratitude letters, where students wrote heartfelt messages to significant women in their lives
  • library activities, including badge making to celebrate inspiring women, interactive scavenger hunts and curated IWD displays
  • a staff morning tea at our Donvale campus
  • IWD Exhibition in the Senior School gallery, showcasing the work of past and present students representing their voices, ideas and imagination
  • a communion service recognising International Women’s Day
  • a Wall of Inspiring Women, alongside a range of student-led fundraising initiatives
  • an outstanding response to the Dress for Success collection, with over 500 items of clothing, bags and shoes generously donated by our community.

Thank you to all students, staff, alumni and families who contributed to the week. Your involvement helped create an environment where important conversations could take place and where the values of respect, equity and inclusion were brought to life.
