Our adventure began with visits to two incredible new sites, including Bruthen Caravan Park. The staff guided us through the area, pointing out the tranquil creek, the abundant bats and the charm of the town of Bruthen. From there, we ventured into the forest to Logs Crossing, where the staff delivered water to a local resident and checked on his wellbeing – a simple but powerful reminder of the importance of community. Our journey continued to the stunning Eagle Point, a hidden gem with breathtaking views, before returning to the heart of Toona.
Back at camp, we couldn’t help but notice the extraordinary care the Outdoor Education staff extended to us, preparing meals, itineraries, checking in constantly and fussing over every detail. At first, we felt a little embarrassed to be treated almost like celebrities, but it quickly became clear: this same level of dedication and respect is extended to every student, every staff member and the wider community. Watching students play, explore and experience the outdoors safely, with gentle guidance and encouragement, highlighted the care that defines the program.
That evening, the magic continued as the instructors led the students down to the jetty to witness the glowing luminescence in the water. Their wonder and excitement were a joy to behold. It was a perfect example of the Outdoor Education team nurturing curiosity. The following day brought one of Victoria’s most picturesque bike rides through the East Gippsland Rail Trail, with the staff ensuring everyone had snacks, encouragement and energy to enjoy the day. After a refreshing swim and another delicious camp meal, the adventures continued with a thrilling ride on Storm, the fast boat, across the lakes to Paynesville.
Reflecting on the experience, it was clear that the Carey values of Care, Respect and Growth were woven through every moment, from small acts of thoughtfulness to guiding students through challenges. Even when the unexpected occurred, the staff demonstrated relational practice and unwavering attention to wellbeing, ensuring learning and fun went hand in hand. The Outdoor Education team exemplifies what it means to live our values, creating experiences that inspire, support and connect the entire community.
