Inspiring our young writers

Our recent Carey Celebrates Literature Festival was a huge success. Once again, we hosted some big names in children’s literature: James Phelan, Lucinda Gifford, Heath McKenzie and Michael Wagner. This accomplished literary group enthralled our students by sharing their experiences in becoming published authors and illustrators.

In his highly entertaining presentation for Years 4, 5 and 6, James Phelan captivated students with his tales of writing action adventures for upper primary and young adults. Students especially loved the humorous nature of his presentation. Lucinda Gifford excited our younger students with a drawing activity and Michael Wagner humorously recounted where his story ideas originate with our Year 3 and 4 students. The much-loved illustrator of the Do Not Open This Book series, Heath McKenzie, shared his easy-to-follow tips for drawing basic animal shapes with students from Prep to Year 6.

The festival created quite a buzz as it is unique experiences such as these that inspire our young students to develop and pursue their own writing and illustrating talents.
