What a term (or even year) this one has been – who would have thought we would be having curfews in Melbourne? And yet we do. Everyone is feeling the strain – some more than others due to their adverse circumstances. Many are looking to the future with anxiety as hope fades and despair grows. It is not hard to grow discouraged in times such as this.

In the Old Testament is the story of Elijah who was overcome with discouragement and fear. He had basically given up hope. How God responded to him may be helpful for us. This is what happened:

  1. He had a good sleep – this restored and renewed him
  2. He had something nice to eat – this gave him comfort and strength
  3. God gave him perspective – so often when we feel discouraged, we lose perspective and things can appear worse than they are
  4. God revealed himself to Elijah in a gentle breeze – not in an earthquake, a fire or wild wind. The grace and comfort of God can be found in simple things like the magnificence of a flower, a beautiful sunset, the love and care of a trusted friend, the laughter of a child.

May God give us eyes to see his beauty and love in the simple things of life. It may not change our circumstances, but it will give perspective and hope that we are not alone in this difficult time. For God’s invitation to walk with us throughout life’s journey still stands.

May God’s peace be with you all. Be assured of my prayers for the Carey community. Have a restful break and enjoy those two highlights of our present lives – a walk around the block and doing the grocery shopping!
