As Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and the Fairy Tale Creatures exclaimed: ‘This is Our Story!’

And what a wonderful story it was. Congratulations to the cast, orchestra and crew of Shrek who brought such joy to our Carey community over the seven-show run. The energy and emotion witnessed on closing night as they all revelled in the conclusion of a truly special shared experience was palpable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Director, Tim Schwerdt, for the artistry he brings to the stage through his work with the students. The opportunity he affords the students to explore their character and bring it to life on stage is a remarkable process, and something the students won’t soon forget. Vocal coach, Alicia Bendall, works tirelessly with the singers and the effort was evidenced in the exceptional solo and ensemble work that was witnessed on stage. As Musical Director I want to thank Daniel Neal, James Bradley, Christine Luo and George Andrews for their support of the student musicians and for being such great role models. Thanks also to Rachel Magner for the work she does with the crew to ensure that all runs smoothly on the night. Finally, to our wonderful parents and extended Carey community – thank you for your support of the Performing Arts students at Carey and for so enthusiastically showing your appreciation for all they do.

Autumn Music Camp
We have just returned from Autumn Music Camp where the Concert Band, Vivaldi Strings, Orpheus and Chamber Choir all had two days of intensive rehearsals and sectionals. The chill in the air at Rutherford Park in Blampied did not slow them down and they all worked hard to achieve some excellent results. For Vivaldi Strings, this is a great opportunity to prepare for the Victorian School Music Festival, which takes place in a few weeks, having the opportunity to work as a whole group and in smaller sectionals. Concert Band were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Ken Waterworth, a leading Wind Band director in Australia. Ken spent much of Monday working with the students on ensemble skills with some very positive outcomes. Thank you to all students who attended the camp and worked so hard, and to all of the staff who worked with the students on their music, and to the staff who provided further pastoral support.

As we conclude Shrek and Autumn Music Camp, we begin setting the stage for the next events. We look forward to seeing you at events such as the Autumn Band Concert, Choral Concert, JSK Winter Concert and of course, Strictly Ballroom.
