As we prepare to farewell what has been an extraordinary 2020 school year, there are a number of significant traditional events that we will be celebrating in a slightly less traditional way over the next few days.

Graduation
Our graduation ceremony on 7 December will be an online event whereby parents will be able to join in the celebrations through a link on Canvas at 9.00am. The ceremony can be viewed in chapters. Our Year 6 students will then process through the corridors of JSK to be formally farewelled by the staff and students.

Giving Tree
This year, more than any other year, there are many families in our city who will not be able to provide their children with Christmas joy. As a whole school, we are partnering with Baptcare to play our part in providing Christmas gifts to families in need. On the final day of the school year, we will gather together to present our donations and gifts to the Giving Tree. Baptcare will then distribute these gifts to the families they are working to support during this difficult time. Please leave the gifts unwrapped to help match the gifts with the appropriate age groups. Junior School Kew families are encouraged to purchase a gift for a child in need and bring it to present on Tuesday 8 December or place under the tree in Reception from 1 December.

Reports
Over the weekend it has been a pleasure to read the final part of the student feedback and reporting package, the Semester 2 summative reports. Reading about the progress in both the learning and personal growth for individual students has been enjoyable and a credit to teachers, students and parents given the unique year we have experienced. The summative report will be accessible online on Monday 7 December.

Maths Olympiad
This year we have had 70 able mathematicians compete in the Maths Olympiad competition. We were thrilled at the commitment shown by our dedicated students completing three out of the five tests online. Recently we were able to celebrate the many wonderful results that were achieved this year. Congratulations to Joanna from Year 5 who scored 24/25 a near perfect score and the highest overall result in JSK. Joanna is pictured above with six other competitors and their coach.

Booklists for 2021
With only a week of the school year remaining, it is important to consider ordering now for your child’s 2021 booklist. Students in Years 3 to 6 require stationery and other items from our year level booklists which are available online through the Campion website. Use the code 9FH8 to access the Carey Junior School Kew booklist. You can pick up the items personally from Campion Education in Nunawading, from school on 27 January or have them delivered to your home. Booklist ordering online closes on Monday 7 December.

Orientation
Welcoming our new 2021 students required some creative thinking this year with our new students meeting their 2021 classmates and teachers online during our regular orientation morning. Our new Year 5s then came onsite after school in small groups to meet each other and their teachers in person. The new students were then paired up with a buddy from their 2021 class for a play in the park after school this week. Thanks to the JSPA for working with the School to support this very important event.

Staffing
It is with great pleasure we announce the appointment of our graduate teacher for 2021, Jaime Bannerman. Jaime brings to Carey an interesting background with degrees in veterinary nursing, applied science and a Bachelor of Education. We look forward to welcoming Jaime to Junior School next year.

We wish all of our families a very happy Christmas and a restful break and sincerely thank you for your support and positivity in this remarkable year.
