Maths and English success
This year we have had 71 able Mathematicians compete in the Maths Olympiad competition. This competition focusses on challenging mathematical worded problems that must be completed within a time limit. The students competed against other schools across Australia and New Zealand. We were once again delighted by the commitment shown by our dedicated students completing two out of the five tests online. This year we were successful in receiving a high achievement award in the teams division and four of our students – Alice Zhang, Jerry Hu, Nicholas Chao-Hong and Ethan Lui – were in the top 10% across Australia and New Zealand.

This year, Charlotte Sampson in Year 6 was once again invited to attend the National Finals of the Future Problem Solving Competition. Charlotte had to develop her critical, creative and futuristic thinking skills. She was challenged to apply her mind to some of the significant issues facing the world of today and the future, equipping her with the vision, skills and tools to design and promote positive futures for the society in which we all live.

Charlotte chose to write a short story on the topic of Wearable Technology, set in the future in 2049 and called her story Slipping Through the Cracks. You can read this creative story in the 2021 Carey Chronicle.

The best stories, and their authors, from around Australia were invited to the National Finals, and it is estimated that more than 250,000 young people internationally participate each year. We congratulate Charlotte on her achievement as the third-place winner in the Junior Division of Scenario Writing.

Year 5 Production
We were so pleased to be able to witness the culmination of so much hard work in the Year 5 Production, Space Race. This original play was written for our students by playwright Barry Kay. With help from several of our staff throughout the Junior School, the Production was ably led by Simone Quadling, who has reflected on the journey in this article.

‘Once a part of the Carey family, always a part of the Carey family’
It is with a tinge of sadness that we farewell the following much loved Junior School staff: Janine de Paiva, Angela Johnston, Anna Davidson, Christine Gilliland, Sabina Flemming, Brada Webber, Sharon Rong, Em Guizzo, Ivana Psyhogios, Andrew Nichol, Oakley Grenell and Rebecca Johnson.

We wish them all the very best in their next adventure and thank them for their wonderful service and dedication to the Junior School community.

Reports
Over the weekend it has been a pleasure to read the final part of the student feedback and reporting package, the Semester 2 summative reports. Reading about the progress in both the learning and personal growth for individual students has been enjoyable and a credit to teachers, students and parents given the circumstances again this year. The summative report will be accessible online on Monday 6 December.

We wish all our families a very Happy Christmas and a restful break and look forward to an uninterrupted school year next year!
