On the first Friday of March, Year 11 Art students had the opportunity to explore galleries amongst the north-east suburbs of the inner city, for both education and fun. The excursion was very interactive and engaging as we were able to ask questions to people who have built their careers around their passions for creative design. We went to the James Makin Gallery, LCI Melbourne, Outré Gallery and the Collingwood Yards. There was a representation of many different mediums throughout the day, including painting, sculpture, fashion, as well as photography, which was the focus of the display in James Makin Gallery as this month is the PHOTO 2022 international festival of photography. We were lucky enough to visit the Outré Gallery, which was particularly appealing to students as there were many pop culture references, and a representation of many different artists and styles. Overall, the excursion was very fun and engaging, and I look forward to future creative excursions.

To start off the day, we visited the James Makin Gallery, where James talked to us about what goes into running a private gallery, his experiences in working with artists and the steps that he takes to optimise his space. We then went to LCI Melbourne, a leading school for art and design. We got a tour around the school, had a look at some of the current students’ work and did a fun art project to design our ‘dream bedroom’ run by one of their mentors. We stopped for lunch at a trendy restaurant in Collingwood before heading off to the Outré Gallery which had a wide range of cool prints and other artworks. To finish off the day we visited Collingwood Yards. Collingwood Yards gave us a look into what artists can do out of school, and the sense of community that art creates. The excursion overall was really enjoyable. It taught my classmates and I some insights into working in the art world and has inspired future work.

My favourite part of the excursion was our visit to Outré Gallery. There were a lot of prints and books from Studio Ghibli in there which I loved. There was also a variety of different art styles which I took an interest in. Throughout the day, we also learnt about how a private gallery runs and what is involved in running a private gallery, we got to see different projects that students there were working on at LCI, and saw the works of lots of different artists at Collingwood Yards. The many contemporary artists that we saw inspired me to explore a wider range of topics for my future exhibition pieces and not just limit myself to generic, overdone topics.
