Recently, Unit 1 and 2 Visual Communication Design students undertook a rendering workshop. This workshop ran for a whole school day and was instructed by Prima from Studio Copic, a professional design group supporting the development of technical drawing skills. The main purpose of the workshop was to help the students learn how to use their Copic markers to make drawn objects look realistic, as well as to build skills to help with future renderings and assignments.

Throughout the day, the students were taught how to successfully render Industrial and Environmental designs and objects such as a phone, a coffee table, a car and more. The realism of the renderings was enhanced through the use of texture boards which assisted in showcasing realistic materials, namely wood and leather. The realistic look was further improved by showing highlights and tints such as shining and reflective surfaces with the aid of coloured pencils and white Posca markers. Overall, the workshop greatly assisted in providing students with new skills that will be very important in creating future renderings and projects within the Visual Communication and Design programs in Year 11 and 12.

After completing the workshop last year myself, I have found these new rendering skills to be extremely beneficial in not just Visual Communication, but my other Art and Design subjects. The same can be said for my classmates, who have also expertly incorporated their rendering skills into school assignments and personal projects outside of school. Developing such associations with professional designers and artists outside our school also gives us experience with working with industry professionals to support our pathways through to university and into the design industry.
