I recently read this quote from Mahatma Gandhi:
‘The things that will destroy us are:
Politics without principle
Pleasure without conscience
Wealth without work
Knowledge without character
Business without morality
Science without humanity
Worship without sacrifice’
If Gandhi had cause to reflect on the state of his world and warn of the likely consequences, how much more relevant are these words for the present? The global community desperately needs leaders of character, humanity and principle. Power in the hands of those who are without either compassion or conscience becomes dangerous and fearful. The words of Jesus, who said that the orientation of our lives should be towards service of others, are a good reminder of where true fulfilment is to be found. Home and school are the primary places where character and integrity are developed. There are many challenges to living with integrity as Gandhi’s quote highlights, yet it is a challenge we must not shy away from.
God’s blessing to you and your family.
