Thomas M Wright graduated from Carey in 2001. He left with the Year 12 Literature and Drama Prizes and more importantly, the inspiration and determination to go onto a successful international career in theatre, film, production and direction. Tom has also acted in films and series such as Everest, Balibo, Top of the Lake and The Bridge.
The OCGA are proud to announce Tom's first feature film, Acute Misfortune. The film recounts the final years of the Archibald Prize-winning artist Adam Cullen and his relationship with his biographer, the founder of The Saturday Paper, Erik Jensen. The film received The Age critics prize at the Melbourne International Film Festival and was named in The Monthly Awards and Screen Daily's best films of the year. The Guardian called it 'An enthralling, complex triumph. The best Australian bio-pic since Chopper.'
Throughout school, Tom spent his spare time either reading or at the cinema. He was grateful to be encouraged to pursue his passions in film, theatre and literature at Carey even though at the time he felt that creating films himself was out of reach. Tom was very much inspired by some of his teachers, in particular the Head of Drama at the time, Sara Reece: ‘She took me under her wing and was both very tough on me and profoundly supportive. She will want it noted that she intervened when I was about to be expelled – and kept me at the school by offering me the lead in the school play. She entirely altered my path.
‘My Literature teacher Brian Keyte was another influence. His class taught me to look for the threads and layers hidden within work, to find ideas within abstraction and draw it back to personal feeling and shared experience. There were a number of teachers there I won’t forget – and the lessons I learned from them and the help I received left an indelible mark on me.’
Acute Misfortune opens across the country on 16 May with a series of special screenings and Q&As. Treat yourself to a night out at the cinema while supporting the Australian film industry and a fellow member of the Carey community.
